The legendary 'Red 5'

The Williams FW14B was designed by Adrian Newey and used during the 1991 and1992 Formula One seasons. This car was the dominant car of 1992 and Mansell wrapped up the 1992 Drivers' Championship with a then record 9 wins in a season.

To mark 25 years since Mansell's victory in the British GP and 1992 title success Williams Heritage, the team's division which preserves, showcases and runs a fleet of cars dating back to 1977, ran the FW14B during lunch breaks on the Saturday and Sunday of the Classic.

John Cobb's Brooklands World Speed Record Holder, Napier-Railton

This is one of my favorite cars. The Napier-Railton is an aero-engined race car built in 1933, designed by Reid Railton to a commission by John Cobb, and built by Thompson & Taylor. It was driven by Cobb, mainly at the Brooklands race track where it holds the all-time lap record (143.44 mph (230.84 km/h)) which was set in 1935. This stands in perpetuity as the circuit was appropriated for military purposes during the Second World War and was never used as a racing track again.

This picture was actually taken at its home Brooklands. We went to the Museum with on of the goals to see this vehicle on display. We have seen it in action at the Goodwood Festival of Speed many times, it sounds amazing. When we got to its permanent spot in the Museum the space was empty with a sign saying it had gone to Penrith Sands to help mark the re-running of Bab's (That's another story).

Disappointed but not defeated because Brooklands is a wonderful place we continued our adventure. We came across the fenced off area below the original Brooklands banking that remains to this day. I said to Lynda "We can't come to Brooklands and not stand on the hallowed banking" so through the barrier we went.

Got up to the banking looked right and to our complete surprise there was the Napier-Railton being photographed under the famous iron Bridge on the Brooklands concrete banking complete with a period Bentley and all the people in period dress. I had to take advantage of the staging.

I hovered behind the professional photographer, who I figured must know what he is doing better than me, and clicked off some shots absolutely brilliant experience!

Later I got some more fantastic shots of the Napier-Railton being staged in front of the period fuel station at the Museum with the Mechanic filling the car while the driver looked on - what a treat.

Sydney’s Allard interpretation of the American dragster. Driven by himself, it’s noise and spectacle stunned the UK motoring press at its Silverstone launch in 1964. On a typically ‘non Californian’ Northamptonshire day, the 354 cubic inch (5.75 litre, 6-71 GMC supercharged Chrysler engined creation made its’ first bellowing run down a quarter mile of the Silverstone club straight. This marked the birth of British drag racing in Britain, all down to Sydney’s (good) eye spotting the potential of an exciting new addition to British motorsport. Subsequently the British Drag Racing Foundation was formed with Sydney Allard as President.

The Allard Dragster is now housed at National Motor Museum, Beaulieu but is often displayed at SantaPod where Lynda and I have seen run the 1/4 mile (albeit slowly). This picture was taken at SantaPod on one of those days it did a demonstration run.

Marc Marquez on the limit

This is Marc Marquez on the limit around Luffield during his Pole lap of the British Moto GP.

A rain hit Silverstone made for an interesting start to Sunday’s British Grand Prix. Marc Marquez’s race pace in the dry had been almost untouchable, but this meant nothing as the wet race got underway. Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) had taken an early lead but Marquez and Rossi were able to pass him and the pair set about breaking away from the rest of the MotoGP™ field. Marquez and his Repsol Honda were sat comfortably behind Rossi and were six seconds ahead of the riders fighting for third. Unfortunately on Lap 13 Marquez fell at Turn 1, ending his race and title chances.

This is Valentino full on through Woodcote during qualifying at the British Moto GP at Silverstone 2015

Valentino Rossi regained the lead in the MotoGP championship with his victory in a dramatic wet race at Silverstone. Leyton House TOM’S Toyota 86C Group C1 sportscar raced by Geoff Lees, Satoru Nakajima and Mansori Seyika in the 1986 Le Mans.

The 86C was built by the TOM’S factory and run by the Leyton House team competing in the 1986 Le Mans. Powered by the same race-proven turbocharged 2.1-litre 4T-GTE engine that helped Toyota achieve a creditable 12th place finish in the 1985 Le Mans, it is a 650bhp monster equipped with a special twin-coil, twin-spark MoTeC ignition system and a classic Hewland DG gearbox.

Although this distinctive number 36 86C didn’t enjoy the success of its predecessor – it qualified in 40th position out of a grid of 54 cars but failed to finish the race proper.

Leyton House Kremer Porsche Chassis: 962-118 T-1

Originally applied to a factory Porsche 962C, the 118 chassis number is believed to have been used for at least four other Thompson-tubbed Kremer 962s. This was probably to avoid paying custom charges for every new car. Featured is one of these early 962 CK6s, using chassis 118. It is believed to be the fourth and final Kremer/Thompson 118 built, which raced in the World Championship in 1987 and 1988 and was subsequently campaigned in Japan. Today it has been beautifully restored to the Leyton House livery used by the Kremer works team and is a regular in historic events.

Chassis 001 was subsequently modified mid-season to accommodate the Ilmor 2175A engine the team used in 1991. The drivers for 1990 were the highly rated Ivan Capelli and Maurício Gugelmin. The CG in the name stood for Cesare Gariboldi, a March Leyton team manager who was killed in a road accident in 1989

I'm having a bit of fun with this pictorial. They say photography is all about being in the right place at the right time. I certainly was for this sequence of shots. There are actually 3 more in the suite but these four best represent Mike's "Moment".

To be fair Mike was giving it his all to beat his arch rival Martin Groves. Nine time Mike had to settle for second place to Martin. Earlier in the day Mike had set a personal best time of 29.71 but it was still not good enough to beat Martin who set 29.60. Second place again!

Seriously, I hope the damage was not to bad, it certainly entertained the spectators!

This car was on display at the BMW owners Club stand near Luffield. This was one of the bigger club displays at the event with some remarkable vehicles to admire. However Andy's DTM took pride of place.

Andy spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons racing for BMW in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, scoring his best result in the final round of the 2013 season at the Hockenheimring, where he finished in sixth after starting in third.

Silverstone Classic, 1965 BMW 1800 TI/SA

BMW 1800 TI/SA this weekend. Produced in 1965 specifically for works teams, only 200 such cars were built featuring twin carburettors, a higher compression ratio and a five speed gearbox. The 130bhp TI/SA, which won many races including a second place finish at the 24 Hours of Spa, will be piloted in the ‘under 2-Litre Touring Car’ category by the BMW M3 DTM driver Andy Priaulx.

Andy Priaulx enjoyed extraordinary battle in the Sir John Whitmore Trophy for under 2-litre Touring cars. Piloting a BMW 1800, led during the early exchanges . A four-way scrap for supremacy ensued between two Lotus Cortina's and two BMWs and was eventually won by the Cortina of Leo Voyazides and Simon Hadfield after Priaulx had passed the BMW baton to his team-mate. It was lovely to be sliding a touring car around again, said a beaming Priaulx afterwards.

Goodwood Festival of Speed, BMW 320i, 2005 World Championship winning car

(extract from Wikipedia)

Priaulx repeated his 2004 success in 2005, 2006 and 2007, clinching the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC, essentially the same series, with two races outside Europe in 2005 and three in 2006) at the final round in Macau. In 2005, he won the crown with two second-place finishes in the final round when his nearest rivals, Dirk Müller and Fabrizio Giovanardi both failed to score.

The following year, a win in the opening race of the final meeting left him needing to finish fifth in the final event to beat Jörg Müller by a single point, which he achieved.

Heading into the final meeting of the 2007 WTCC season at Macau, Priaulx was joint leader of the championship alongside former BTCC champion Yvan Muller. He came eighth in the first race and won from pole position in the second race to claim his and BMW's third WTCC championship in a row.

He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours.
